Home Remedies for Scabies
By Cindy Ausbrooks
Scabies are microscopic mites that burrow under the skin and lay eggs. The damage done by the mites incites itching and scratching. This worsens the infection by causing open sore wounds in which the scabies can multiply and bacterial infections can manifest. There are several home remedies that can be used to treat scabies. Note that these are anecdotal home remedies. If the problem persists or does not appear to improve by their use, consult a physician immediately.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are natural ways to treat and kill scabies. Their powerful aroma smothers scabies, and are usually concentrated enough to kill them on contact. Essential oils can be dangerous and need to be prepared and applied properly. First, wash the infected area with an herbal skin wash, preferably tea tree. Take a tsp. of any essential oil you choose and mix with 1 cup of vegetable oil. Almond, corn, olive or sesame oil can be used. Apply the mixture directly to the afflicted skin and allow to sit as long as possible.
Cloves
Cloves are a traditional home remedy for scabies. They contain anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-microbial properties, which kill scabies, reduce itching and redness, and fight any bacterial infections in the open wounds. To properly apply cloves, add 10 drops of clove essential oil to a mixture of ½ cup honey and ½ cup water. Apply to the afflicted areas. Clove oil should not be used by pregnant women.
Tansy and Rosemary
Tansy has been used as an herbal pest repellent for many years. It is now commonly brewed into a tea to treat scabies. Simmer 2 tsp. of dried tansy in 1 cup of water for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and allow it to cool. Use a clean cloth to soak up the tea and gently apply to infected patches. It should be applied several times per day, but one application before bedtime can be sufficient. Even though this is a tea, it should never be taken internally. Rosemary can be applied in the same way to help treat bacterial infections and kill scabies mites.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is used to fight a number of different parasites, including scabies. Combine 1 tsp. of tea tree oil with 5 tsp. of vegetable oil of your choice. Apply the mixture directly to sores before going to bed. Tea tree oil is very powerful and it is recommended to try a test amount to ensure that no irritation is experienced. Take a small dab of the oil mixture, apply to a small portion of skin, and wait five to 10 minutes. If no irritation occurs, apply liberally to the infected areas.
